The LME is closed on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday for the New Year holiday and reopens on Thursday morning. The January options declaration, which would normally takes place on Wednesday, will now be on Thursday instead. "It's been pretty deadly today," said one trader. Prices held a tight range all morning, barely moving on a stock rise of 3,950 tonnes which was in line with expectations. Slow trading conditions during the last few days of 1996 were a far cry from chaotic activity earlier in the year. Prices collapsed to a 2-1/2 year low of $1,745 in June from the year's high of $2,715 just over a month earlier as Japan's Sumitomo Corp uncovered billions of dollars of losses. Since then low global stocks and nearby supply tightness have supported a steady recovery. But analysts are looking for further stock builds in 1997, taking the heat off nearby spreads and leading to quieter conditions for copper in general. Cash ended the day at around $92 above three month values. Aluminium finished the morning kerb on Tuesday at $1,546 from $1,551 on Monday. A stock rise of 5,475 tonnes weighed on values, traders said. Prices finished the year well down on the 1996 peak of $1,700 hit on the first day of the year but even further away from the low reached in October of $1,305. Lead prices eased, ending Tuesday at $700 from $705 after stocks fell 25 tonnes. Supply shortages and low stocks helped lift prices to a high of $861 in May, but easing tightness caused values to slump to a nadir of $666 in December. Nickel recovered from Monday's fresh 2-1/4 year low of $6,365 on light short-covering and book-squaring. Three month futures ended the kerb $100 higher at $6,465 after stocks fell 648 tonnes despite expectations of a rise. Prices ended 1996 27 percent below the year's high of $8,850 hit in February. Some traders and analysts said heavy losses in recent weeks had been overdone, suggesting a quick recovery was possible. "Sentiment is so overwhelmingly bearish and...it (nickel) is now running quite heavily short - could a swift turnaround as in the aluminium market be in the offing?" brokers Brandeis said. A 6,500-tonne stock drawdown on Tuesday failed to boost zinc, which finished the day weaker at $1,060 from $1,068. Prices traded in a $997-$1,123 range in 1996. Tin gained $80 to finish the day at $5,840 after stocks fell 130 tonnes. The highs and lows were $5,680 and $6,650 respectively in 1996.
