Three months copper finished the morning kerb $24 lower at $2,126 per tonne after failing on the upside on Friday. It ended the morning only $1 above its low after triggering interim stops in thin business, traders said. Stocks were expected to rise marginally on Tuesday after an increase of 2,075 tonnes on Friday. No stocks data will be released on Friday due to the Exchange's closure for Christmas and Boxing Day holidays on Wednesday and Thursday. "I think people are more interested in what happens after the New Year. The market appears tight and people are wondering if stocks will start going down again in January," one floor trader said. The premium of cash over three months metal eased to around $85/$95 after $107 at Friday's close. It had spiked up last week from a low of $50. Trading was thin across the board, with business expected even slower in half-day trading on Tuesday. Aluminium held to robust levels, but failed to gather enough steam to challenge the $1,570 level. It ended the kerb at $1,558, up $6.50, after touching a high of $1,560. Support was pegged at $1,540, then $1,506/7. Nickel breached the $6,600 level after diving $135 on Friday, finishing $60 weaker at $6,580. Even though the technical indicators have dipped, they continue to show an upward bias, broker Rudolf Wolf said. "We would expect dips to provide buying opportunities and we would look to place stops below $6,500 whilst also awaiting a negative cross over on the technical indicators before turning bearish," a commentary said. Lead ran out of upward momentum after peaking at $713/14 on Thursday and Friday. Three month prices finished the morning kerb down $7 at $707, with support pegged at $700, then $684/6, with an important floor at the recent lows of $666. Zinc was little changed at $1,066, up 50 cents, and tin gained $10 to $5,780. Alloy finished the morning session up $5 at $1,395/400. In a daily market comment Investment Research of Cambridge said that alloy's close on Friday indicated a break through the top end of its previous tight trading range and it now looks capable of a move up to $1,450 a tonne.
