Base metals slip from highs by LME midsession
LONDON, Nov 22 (Reuter) - Base metals came off the boil by
Friday's London Metal Exchange midsession recess as end-week
profit-taking and broker book squaring dented upside sentiment.
Traders said overall the market remained quiet and was
generally in a period of consolidation.
Aluminium dipped from a 3-1/2 month high of $1,535 a tonne,
while recent market leader copper drove towards $2,200.
Traders said the drift in aluminium had been expected
following a larger-than-expected LME stocks rise. But several
believed recent investmant fund buying, market tightness around
January and uptrending charts could see prices higher next week.
Traders said the tightness may reflect investment fund
shorts following forward selling last October.
They said a large proportion of aluminium stocks are tied up
in long-term financing deals and are not readily available to
the market to alleviate the growing tightness.
Aluminium's cash to three months contango was at $19.
Three months delivery settled the morning at $1,523, against
$1,504. Traders are targeting resistance at $1,540 next week.
Copper eased to $2,203, down $9.
Traders said the fall in LME stocks had ben expected but
several voiced concern that they may start to rise near-term.
Nearby backwardations may attact metal into LME warehouses.
LME copper inventory at 93,900 tonnes stands at the lowest
for 6-1/4 years. Individual location movements will be more
important than the overall net figure, with Far Eastern and U.S.
warehouses again being scrutinised next week.
Nickel edged up despite a stocks rise.
It was last at $6,880, up $10.
Zinc was unmoved at $1,076, while lead settled unchanged at
$713. Tin dipped by $30 to $6,130.
Alloy was quoted at $1,363/65, versus $1,345/50.
