Traders said the impetus for the rise from an early low of $2,010 a tonne came from several directions, offsetting negative sentiment prompted by reports earlier this week of a large hidden stockpile. Instead, LME stocks were drawn down again on Friday, nearby spread backwardations flared with cash/threes above $100 and option-related buyers joined the speculative spree, they said. Visible LME inventories dropped by 8,000 tonnes to a new 6-1/4 year low of 101,175 tonnes, which was largely in line with forecasts, although there had been some unsettling talk of an increase prior to the data. Confirmation of a decline kicked the market higher, with traders also heartened by the lack of a sizeable tonnage delivered into Singapore. There were 5,500 tonnes landed, but this much lower than the 20,000/40,000 tonnes that many had expected to be registered there recently. Option delta hedging kicked in as downside strikes receded and upside calls got closer to in-the-money, they added. Three months prices raced through chart resistance at $2,040, $2,080 and then the psychological $2,100 level. Values ended the kerb at $2,131, up $99 a tonne from Thursday. Traders expect the market to remain highly volatile. "I'm not prepared to call the next $50 move -- it could do that in a blink of an eye," one said. Other markets tended to take a back seat to copper, but most benefited from the wave of bullish sentiment. Aluminium pushed higher and is now poised to challenge $1,450 again. Last kerb trade was at $1,443, up $15. Zinc moved up as well, but the advance was limited with last kerb business at $1,064, up $4.50. News that Spain's Asturiana had finally liquidated its LME futures position came as no surprise as this operation had been continuing for some time. Lead gained $4 to finish the kerb at $729, while tin rose $50 to finish at $6,030. Alloy was quoted at a steadier $1,310/15. However, nickel bucked the trend after stalling below $7,200, and last kerb business was at $7,120, down $40. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 15. studenoga 1996.
