Three months delivery nickel at one stage hit $6,650 the lowest levels since October 1994. But late bouts of buying emerged to lift prices slightly to $6,700, still well down on Friday's $7,050 close. "The fall reflected chart selling...It was not driven lower by any fundamental news," one trader said. Copper after an earlier attack on resistance at $2,200 eased back under profit-taking and general liquidation. Traders said nickel's decline came against a backdrop of deteriorating charts. "The market was expecting support to emerge at $6,900 and $6,800," one trader said. He explained that once these levels were breached aggressive stop-loss selling emerged from most quarters of the market. Traders are now expecting further falls but are unsure of where the market will bottom out. Copper's earlier surge to near key $2,200 resistance against a backdrop of low LME stocks looked to have faltered by the end of Monday morning's business. Copper was last at $2,155, up on Friday's LME kerb of $2,148. Most ring activity concentrated on increasingly tight spreads. Cash to threes settled at $115-$125, versus a backwardation of $105-$115 on Friday. Traders said they expected the nearbys to remain tight and noted heavy borrowing around the December dates. Also the market was keeping a close eye on Tuesday's LME stock report, which was expected to show further draw downs after hitting a 6-1/4 year low of 101,175 tonnes on Friday. Addition declines in inventories could prompt further gains to copper. But technical analysts noted copper's 14-day RSI at 72 percent was entering overbought territory. Aluminium ended the morning at $1,439 a small $2 loss. Traders expected prices to consolidate in the recent well worn range of $1,420/$1,470. Lead sank to $715, a $10 loss. Zinc was modestly lower at $1,057, down $7, while tin was down $50 at $6,010. Alloy was neglected and was last little moved at $1,305/10. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 18. studenoga 1996.
