For the second straight session, March peaked at $1,404, the bottom of the gap, only to run into trade selling, dealers said. Traders are hoping buy stops looming above the gap near $1,410, if activated, could lead to further gains. March cocoa ended $3 weaker at $1,394 after trading from $1,404 to $1,388. Spot December ended up $2 at $1,352, while the back months fell $4 to $7. Some traders said there appeared to be more room on the upside, especially if many speculators, who are believed to be still hanging on to their short positions, begin to cover. Traders await the CFTC Commitment of Traders report due after the close of business Friday to better access the speculative position in the market. While some dealers said the report may show an increase in speculative short positions, the data will not take into account the speculative short covering seen over the last few days. Technically, traders pegged near-erm March support at $1,388, a double bottom on the charts, with a gap on the between $1,382 and $1,379 before seen as the next support level. On the upside, the chart gap between $1,404 and $1,408 remained a critical resistance level. The day's volume reached an estimated 6,103 lots, down sharply from Thursday's official tally of 11,229 lots. 251058 MET nov 96
