But steady trade selling pared gains, preventing the active March contract from filling a chart gap between $1,404 and $1,408 a tonne, dealers said. March cocoa ended $3 a tonne firmer, at $1,397, its highest settlement since October 30, after ranging between $1,404 and $1,388. Spot December ended up $10, to $1,350, while the back months rose $3. Most traders were still reluctant to say the market's recent downtrend was over, noting speculator continued to cover short positions and were not buying the market outright. "It is going to take the specs to get long this market to change the tone," one trader said. Technically, traders said the March contract may need to fill a gap on the downside between $1,382 and $1,379 before another round of buying emerged. After the chart gap between $1,404 and $1,408, resistance was seen at $1,410. On the fundamental side, traders said an estimate by Ivorian Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan which put the country's 1997/98 (Oct-Sep) cocoa crop at around 950,000 tonnes could weigh on the market. Recents estimates have ranged between 850,000 and 950,000 tonnes, traders noted. Duncan said on Thursday the 1996/97 Ivory Coast cocoa crop would decline from a record 1.2 mln tonnes last year because the cocoa bushes were in a falling cycle after very strong growth last year. The day's volume reached an estimated 11,061 lots, up from Wednesday's official tally of 9,358 lots. 221013 MET nov 96
