Copper off highs at LME midsession, aluminium firm
LONDON, Nov 20 (Reuter) - Copper prices settled back from
early five-month highs during Wednesday LME ring trading as
spread backwardations narrowed, but other metals took up the
mantle and raced higher, traders said.
Aluminium cleared $1,500 a tonne to hit the highest for
2-1/2 months while zinc moved above $1,080 at one point to
record its best levels for 6-1/2 months. Despite some
profit-taking and a late sell-off, both markets remained firm.
This.."is mostly about good chart signals and speculators
buying metal...all on the back of copper," one trader said.
Copper hit a peak of $2,240 in early trading before backing
away during the rings as lending against cash/threes cut the
backwardation to $150 from $165.
There was also talk that the long run of inventory declines,
which has brought LME stocks down to the lowest since June 1990,
could be drawing to a close.
Many traders expect to see stocks start to accumulate soon,
and end-year levels may be some 20,000/30,000 tonnes above
current levels.
Three months prices ended the kerb at $2,209 a tonne, down
$16 from Tuesday's kerb.
Aluminium traded up to $1,510 a tonne at one stage this
morning, despite the International Primary Aluminium Institute
(IPAI) reporting that average daily output rose in October.
There was some conmsumer interest, while the market was also
boosted by narrowing contangos, reflecting January date
tightness. Last trade was at $1,503, up $39.
Zinc pushed higher on fund buying, which triggered some
buy-stops, against a background of positive charts. Last morning
business was at $1,078, still up $16 from yesterday.
Tin edged up in undramatic trading and finished the session
at $6,080, up $40, while lead gained just $1, concluding the
kerb at $704.
Nickel looked to settle down after fluctuations seen earlier
this week, attempting to build a base above $6,800. Final
morning business was at $6,840, down $20.
The alloy market was marked higher with primary metal, and
business was seen at $1,360, up some $40.
