CFTC's Commitments of Traders data, released late Friday, revealed a surprisingly high speculative long position, dealers said, and touched off several waves of long liquidation. Speculators were net long 19,433 lots as of October 22, the CFTC reported, or some 5,000 more than what most operators had anticipated, dealers said. Manufacturer-linked buying resurfaced toward the lows at the outset, providing a solid base early in the session. Traders said a fire at a Dutch warehouse over the weekend, which destroyed 11,000 tonnes of cocoa, was behind some of the industry buying interest. But speculators continued to chip away at the market, dragging December through the $1,350 support level just before the closing bell. Traders said U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest world output figures, also released after the close of business on Friday, contributed to today's weaker tone. USDA said world production would exceed consumption by 142,000 tonnes in 1996/97, compared with a 150,000-tonne surplus in 195/96. While most market watchers have predicted a supply shortfall for the coming cocoa year, the USDA numbers were toward the lower end of the deficit forecasts. "The shortfall has been reduced a bit, so that's weighing on the market," said one trader. Benchmark December futures finished down $13 at $1,347 a tonne after trading from $1,346 to $1,360. Second-position March shed $15 to $1,374. The day's turnover was estimated at a steady 8,343 lots. Technically, December's breach of the widely-watched $1,350 level could set the stage for a test of $1,341, a one-month low set October 3. If that level were to hold, the market would likely take aim at resistance near $1,380, chartists said. 291041 MET oct 96
