CSCE cocoa ends tightly mixed, early rally fizzles
NEW YORK, Oct 22 (Reuter) - CSCE cocoa futures ended
clinging to unchanged Tuesday, after a late-session bout of
commission house and local selling erased earlier gains,
traders said.
Cocoa prices ran-up on speculative buying early on,
driving the December contract through $1,390 a tonne
resistance, traders said. But December's failure to breach the
key $1,400 mark prompted traders to take profits.
Benchmark December rose $1 a tonne on the day to $1,384,
having ranged from $1,396 to $1,379. Second-position May eased
$1 to $1,411, while the remaining months finished up $1 to
down $1.
The day's volume was light at an estimated 4,590 lots.
On the charts, traders said December continued to see
$1,400 as a key psychological resistance level, with further
resistance seen toward last week's high of $1,418. Support was
pegged at $1,375.
Traders await the official opening of the 1996/97 Ivorian
cocoa season expected on Wednesday or Thursday, but noted
ex-farm and freight prices have not been set.
Traders said initial Ivory Coast arrivals may help them to
better gauge the size of the West African cocoa crop.
Uncertainty about the size of this season's crop has kept the
market relatively rangebound, they said.
Abidjan traders said weekly arrivals ahead of the season
averaged around 5,000-6,000 tonnes, with the total since the
beginning of October put at around 20,000 tonnes.
Estimated arrivals by this time in the 1995/96 season
ranged from 22,000 to 47,000 tonnes.
In other news, ministers from producing countries meeting
in Gabon on Tuesday finalized an agreement designed to cut
world cocoa production by 90,000 tonnes in the next three
years.
The plan envisages cutting output by 15,000 tonnes in
1996/97, by 30,000 in 1997/98 and by 45,0000 in 1998/99.
The 90,000-tonne cut was initiallly agreed at meetings in
September of the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO).
