The market racked up losses from the outset despite a relatively healthy rise in U.S. third quarter grindings. The grind figures, released just before today's opening bell, showed an increase of 7.52 percent versus the same year-ago period, to 93,933 tonnes. Market sources had forecast the U.S. numbers to rise between three and ten percent from the same period last year. "The (grind) number overall is supportive for the market," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. "There was just a correction today. People were content to take profits going into the weekend." However, some dealers noted the downward restatement of the 1995 figures may have dampened the market's enthusiam. The restated third-quarter 1995 totalled 87,360 tonnes, down more than seven percent from 94,485 tonnes reported last year. The most-active December contract tumbled $23 a tonne on the day, to $1,389, after ranging between $1,407 and $1,384. Second-position March finished down $22, at $1,418, while the remaining months ended $20 to $24 lower. Platt also noted that recent weakness in London may have weighed on market sentiment. "London has not gotten over 1,000 (stg a tonne basis March), which may be a psychological force the market is reckoning with," Platt said. London March cocoa closed 14 stg lower to 986 stg. Technically, some dealers said December's settlement above $1,382-$1,384 support was constructive. To the upside, resistance was seen near $1,400. In other news, Hershey Foods and Finnish confectionery and packaging group Huhtamaki Oy sealed a deal to take over each other's American and European operations. Hershey will buy Huhtamaki Oy's North American candy business, including Milk Duds and Good & Plenty, for $440 million and sell its European candy lines to the Finnish company for $110 million. Volume reached an estimated 8,651 lots, down from Thursday's official tally of 9,425 lots. 211056 MET oct 96
