Speculative and manufacturer-linked buying drove prices up by some $10 a tonne early on, but top-grower Ivory Coast was a ready seller in the mid-$1,390s, capping the market below the key $1,400 mark for the third straight day. "The market again tried to move higher...but it ran into a wall of cocoa," said one trader. Benchmark December futures fell $1 on the day, to $1,383, after ranging from $1,382 to $1,397. Second-position March was down $3, to $1,408, while the remaining months settled unchanged to $3 lower. Volume on the day was fairly thin, at an estimated 4,163 lots. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast said Wednesday it would launch its 1996/97 cocoa marketing campaign beginning tomorrow, and as expected left its key farm-gate price unchanged. The long-awaited announcment, which came shortly after the close of business in New York, was not expected to have an immediate impact on futures markets. As the cocoa flows into port, however, dealers said comparisons with last year's shipments would quickly influence price direction. "The market will now concentrate on arrivals," said one. "We'll be able to track them compared with last year, so from that we'll know where the (futures) market is headed." This year's marketing kick-off was delayed by several weeks, amid what some operators said were disputes over the farm-gate price. The delay appeared to have a chilling effect on the futures market, as traders stood back in anticipation of a flood of crop news. Technically, the market faced stiff resistance at this week's high of $1,396-1,397, followed by $1,400 and $1,418. To the downside, support was eyed at $1,375. 241041 MET oct 96
