Dealers also noted steady arbitrage-linked buying throughout the day, with arbitrage traders taking advantage of a weaker dollar against Sterling to buy New York futures against the London market. Automatic commission house buy orders were triggered in New York's most-active December contract at $1,390 a tonne and up, traders said. But December stopped short at $1,400, a key psychological resistance level. December settled at $1,396, up $17, after ranging between $1,400 and $1,374. Second-position March finished $15 higher at $1,426, while the remaining months gained $12 to $16. Volume was light at an estimated 5,633 lots Tuesday, up from Monday's official tally of 4,153 lots. Technically, traders said December's next upside target would be a gap the charts between $1,406 and $1,408. Traders await the official opening of the Ivory Coast cocoa marketing season, which was slated for today, but the government has not yet fixed farm-gate prices and there is talk the opening may be delayed until October 23. Traders also await the U.S. third quarter grind figures due Friday at 0845 EDT.
