After languishing in negative territory for the first half of the session, several waves of speculator-led buying carried the market back to the plus side. Traders said an early downturn on the British pound against the U.S. dollar put pressure on New York futures, but buying interest returned once the London market closed. May delivery closed $1 a tonne higher, at $1,303, having traded from $1,291 to $1,311. Spot March finished unchanged at $1,262, while the outer months ended $1 to $3 higher. Volume on the exchange reached 7,519 lots, compared with 9,263 on Wednesday. While today's close above $1,300 should bolster the market's technical stance, traders said further upside progress could prove difficult. Producers were likely to sell aggressively into any signficant rally, they said. "When the market went higher, the trade just came in and started selling," one broker said. The May contract faced strong resistance at $1,315-1,320, he said, followed by a major barrier at $1,350. To the downside, support was seen at $1,291. 281027 MET feb 97
