Traders said that Sparks Companies Inc of Tennessee forecast a 1997/98 U.S. cotton crop of 19.67 million bales, slightly higher than previous estimates. Sparks also expected an increase in acreage planted. Last week the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast the 1996/97 crop at 18.951 million bales, and the 1997/98 crop at 17 million to 18.8 million bales. "A forecast of a larger crop next year put some pressure on the back months and may have pulled down the nearby," Steve Platt of Dean Witter Reynolds said. March cotton settled 0.13 cent lower at 74.08 cents per pound, traded 74.20 to 73.90 cents. The back months went out 0.02 to 0.26 cent weaker. Volume was estimated at 5,000 lots compared to Thursday's official 6,114 lots. 201011 MET jan 97
