The market was also awaiting Thursday's USDA report giving a forecast for the U.S. cotton crop in 1996/97. "Most people are looking for a slight increase in terms of production, about 60,000 bales more," said Steve Platt of Dean Witter Reynolds. In its December report, the USDA pegged the 1996/97 crop at 18.738 million bales. One floor source said the Texas crop may be 100,000 to 200,000 bales higher than in the USDA's December report which pegged the state's output at 4.2 million bales. The USDA will also release its cotton supply and demand report on Friday. "I think we have pretty much run out of the speculative selling. We have been seeing some trade support and that helped underpin values and led to some further shortcovering," Platt added. March cotton settled 0.33 cent up at 73.96 cents per pound, traded 74.20 to 73.61 cents. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared to Tuesday's official 12,690 lots. 091013 MET jan 97
