USDA pegged the U.S. cotton crop at 18.951 million bales in 1996/97, with a yield of 709 lbs per acre -- the second largest crop on record and highest yield ever. Output was up 213,300 bales from last month's estimate with most of the increase, 150,000 bales, in Texas which had a record upland cotton yield of 522 lbs per acre. But traders said the report did not come as a major surprise and market reaction was muted. "It was mildly bearish," Prudential Securities analyst Ernest Simon said. "It was not much of a rise in production." Cotton has probably found its bottom for now, floor sources added. Many key players were attending the annual Beltwide Cotton Conferences in New Orleans. March cotton settled 0.40 cent lower at 73.56 cents a lb, traded 73.95 to 73.54 cents. Volume was estimated at 8,500 lots compared to Wednesday's 9,187 lots.
