Three months zinc flipped to a peak of $1,147, showing resilience even though LME inventories failed to fall as much as players hoped. Stocks fell by 975 tonnes to a new total of 486,350 tonnes against expectations of a decline of 5,000 to 7,000 tonnes. "After the stocks data came out prices fell by a couple dollars, but then bounced back. After it held so well, the funds came in again during the rings," one floor trader said. The market took off on Tuesday after stocks fell by 11,975 tonnes, rising by about seven percent since then. By the end of the kerb, prices had eased back to $1,136, a $13 gain on the day and above the key $1,123/4 chart point that marks a break-out from a two-year sideways trading range. In copper most of the action was in the spreads, which flared out again as players sought to cover positions ahead of tight dates coming into play late this month and early in February, dealers said. The premium of cash over February was bid up from $120 in the first ring to $137 by the end of the morning. The cash premium over three months metal also widened, last indicated up about $30 at $205/$210. "Looks like some of the shorts are getting a bit nervous," one trader said. The wider spreads supported three month prices, which held steady despite a 7,025 tonne increase in LME inventories and after failing to break through the $2,300 mark on Thursday. Copper ended the day $11 firmer at $2,259. Aluminium rose modestly but failed to re-attack the eight-month $1,625 peak where it stalled three times this week. The average 1998 spread held wider levels around $23 after rising on Thursday from about $15 the day before. The market is expected to consolidate at $1,600-$1,625/30 prior to gathering steam for another charge higher towards next resistance at $1,680. Three months ended the kerb at $1,612, up $5. Nickel, the only metal to enter negative territory, eased after failing to sustain a rise towards $7,500 on Thursday as heavy trade selling and profit taking came in. "The market needed to close above $7,415 and therefore could now retrace to $7,250 where further consolidation should be seen," broker Brandeis said in a commentary. It finished the morning $30 lower at $7,350. Tin gained $65 to $6,050, recovering well from lows under $6,000 after retracing from a peak of $6,130 on Thursday.
