The other metals put in mixed performances as copper breached resistance, but aluminium and nickel moved into negative territory as they retreated from highs. Three month zinc prices flew to a peak of $1,100 in hectic ring activity and substantial volume, a rise of nearly three percent over Monday's afternoon kerb close. Floor traders said funds jumped into the fray after LME stocks declined by 11,975 tonnes to 487,325 tonnes, the lowest since December 1992. "Chinese selling came in at the highs, but it should be able to get over $1,100 fairly soon," one floor trader said. By the end of the morning kerb, prices settled at $1,094 per tonne, a gain of $24. It was the highest since the market touched $1,123 on March 13, 1996. Copper also pushed higher, slicing through resistance after an uncertain performance on Monday. Three month prices only showed a brief hesitation as they knocked down resistance at $2,275/80, possibly showing a delayed reaction to spreads which flared on Monday, traders said. But by the kerb close prices had come off the $2,288 peak and settled $17 higher at $2,280. The market appeared to have held back on Monday on fears of a stocks rise, but when a miminal 200-tonne build appeared in the data on Tuesday morning, copper was able to break away, traders said. The main movements were a net 500 tonne increase in Trieste and a net 500 tonne fall in Singapore. The premium of cash over February metal held at Monday's strong levels around $130/$135 while the February to three months spread was at a $55 backwardation. Aluminium, however, edged lower after failing to break above $1,625, the high so far on Tuesday and on Monday, ending the morning $8 weaker at $1,616. Analysts say that the market is looking overbought and needs a break before pushing up towards the next targets of $1,638/40 and $1,680. Nickel also came off after backing off resistance. It hit a high at $7,300, close to Friday's peak of $7,320, but then slid back to support ending at $7,180, down $20. Lead marched higher, breaking back above the $700 mark and touching $715, the strongest since December 27, when prices hit $723. "Clearance of $723 is needed to confirm that the market is in fact trending higher...with cold weather in Europe we feel that good replacement battery demand should prompt an increase in orders," broker Rudolf Wolff said in a market commentary. Tin added to recent gains, establishing itself above the $6,000 level and targeting $6,175, the November high. Prices ended the kerb with a $75 gain at $6,035.
