GEN. SMITH RETURNS POSTHASTE FROM ZAGREB, OVER 1000 INCIDENTS IN S

Autor: ;MM;
S $ ARAJEVO SARAJEVO, April 7 (Hina) - The UN Protection Force commander in Bosnia, Gen. Rupert Smith, returned to Sarajevo this morning, after his Zagreb meeting with Yasushi Akashi. According to the UN spokesman in Sarajevo, Smith returned earlier than he had planned to, because of a sudden deterioration of the situation, especially in the Sarajevo and Bihac areas. Over 1,000 armed incidents had been recorded in the past 24 hours, including mortar and anti-aircraft gun fire, in the Sarajevo area alone. Two persons were killed in these attacks, and at least five were wounded, UN sources confirmed. They had no information about the type of shells Serb forces had fired at Sarajevo last night. The only information the UN had was that some shells had been fired from the Spicasta Stijena peak, north-east from the city centre, deep inside the heavy weapons exclusion zone. The UN officials in Sarajevo expressed deep concern over this development saying that Gen. Smith was to assess the new situation and to decide about their next steps. They tried to justify their failure to act by saying that Serbs used only 60mm mortars and shoulder rocket launchers. (Hina) mm bk 071820 MET apr 95
