SARAJEVO, April 4 (Hina) - There were 488 armed incidents in the
wider Sarajevo area yesterday and overnight, UN Protection Force
headquarters in Sarajevo reported on Tuesday.
UN officials described as most serious incidents the fire
exchange between the Bosnian Army and Serbs in the vicinity of
Vrbanja Bridge, the Sarajevo downtown, and Serb attacks on the road
via Mount Igman.
A UN spokesman, Herve Gourmelon, said that Serbs, stationed in
the Sarajevo suburb of Ilidza, last night launched at least three
mortar shells at the Igman road, which was also exposed to fire
from an anti-aircraft 20-mm cannon, a not allowed weapon in the
heavy-arms exclusion zone around the Bosnian capital.
UN military observers could find out where was exactly the
locality of the mortar and the cannon.
The UN spokesman said that the Serbs had put the heavy weapons
inside a densely inhabited area, so that in the event of any
resolute response of UN Protection Force to the Serb fire civilians
might be jeopardized.
The road via Mount Igman is a part of the 'blue route' which
presents the only land connection between the Serb-besieged
Sarajevo and the world.
