Both current and former mayors of Velika Gorica cleared of charges

Autor: mses
VELIKA GORICA, July 12 (Hina) - The County State Prosecutor's Office and the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) have dismissed charges separately pressed against a former mayor of Velika Gorica, Tonino Picula of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and against the current mayor of that town south of Zagreb, Drazen Barisic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

The charges filed by anonymous complainants with the County State Prosecutor's Office against Picula were about alleged unlawful borrowing to Velika Gorica Television (TVG).

Picula was also accused of malfeasance and of inciting the local water supply company's director, Stjepan Uzbasic, to conclude harmful agreements. The SDP believes that HDZ officials were behind the complaint.

The office of the prosecutor reported that it had established that Picula had no intention of damaging the town budget of Velika Gorica but of injecting fresh capital and strengthening the said local television through an increase of the town's share in the broadcaster.

The local branch of the SDP pressed charges against Barisic after he activated a promissory note which TVG had given to the town as a guarantee for the payment of a loan, which led to the blockade of the broadcaster's account. Barisic did this as soon as he assumed the mayoral duty. According to the charges, Barisic did it to ensure the monopoly of another TV station whose co-owner and director he was.

USKOK dismissed Barisic's charges of abuse of office as it was not established that he had activated the promissory note for the sake of his interest or interests of groups close to him.
