Kosor meets outgoing justice minister Simonovic and his successor

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, July 5 (Hina) - Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Monday that later in the day she would sign decisions on relieving Justice Minister Ivan Simonovic of his duties and on appointing Drazen Bosnjakovic, who has so far been a state secretary in the justice ministry, as Simonovic's successor.

After her working visit to the justice ministry, Kosor told the press that the decisions to that effect would be sent to the parliament so that lawmakers could discuss Bosnjakovic's appointment this week.

Simonovic has recently been appointed UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights. He will be the first person to fill the new post, which was approved by the UN General Assembly in December 2009.

Kosor today thanked the outgoing minister for their excellent and efficient cooperation and congratulated him on the appointment in the World Organisation.

The premier voiced satisfaction with the fact that Simonovic was leaving now when all negotiating chapters, including the the policy chapter No. 23 on Judiciary and Fundamental Rights, had been opened within Croatia's European Union accession negotiations.

During her working visit to the justice minsitry, Kosor and ministry officials discussed plans to close the negotiating chapter no. 23.

We have concluded that benchmarks (for provisional closing) are difficult and demanding but that we can definitely meet them and we have started working on that job, Kosor said.

Describing Bosnjakovic as Simonovic's closest associate, the premier expressed conviction in the continuation of good cooperation with the new minister.

Simonovic said that during 20 months of his term in office significant progress had been made in the judiciary and that credit for this went to his good team and support.

Emphasising that he came into office when the talk went on that Zagreb must not turn into Beirut, Simonovic said that the struggle against organised crime had yielded notable results in the meantime.

In this context he spoke about the improvement in the organisation of the criminal justice authorities in Croatia and a bilateral extradition agreement which Croatia and Serbia recently signed.

In the anti-corruption drive there are no untouchables, and this has a great impact on the country's reputation and on its economy, Simonovic added.

He said he had proposed Bosnjakovic as his successor in the ministerial office as he was very well familiar with the judicial system.

Simonovic said that he was absolutely sure that Bosnjakovic would manage the ministry very successfully.

Bosnjakovic said that much work was ahead of him and his ministry and that he would continue implementing the judicial reform.

PM Kosor denied having received a letter of Australian Croat Branko Kakaric who reportedly accuses Bosnjakovic of tax evasion from 2001 to 2008.

Bosnjakovic said that speculations had appeared of his conflict of interest and that the relevant commission had cleared him of those accusations.
