"The market is slipping further into holiday mode," said one trader. During the morning news that Indonesia will impose an additional tax on palm oil exports if producers do not supply 75 percent of their output to the local market and volatile Asia currencies subdued trading after an early flurry. Traders said the impact of any limits would be small and today's news was a move by the Indonesian government to plug holes in the original agreement between the producers and it. However, many doubted that the quotas will stay for long as they run against the wishes of the IMF which has asked for all obstacles to exports to be removed in return for its help. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was unchanged to $2.50 up while products were $5 down to $2.50 up with no further business reported. Lauric oils finished with coconut oil $12.50 to $10 lower and palmkernel oil quoted $7.50 down. In the soft oil sector soy oil was unchanged to 0.50 guilders down after May/Jul traded at 115 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil closed 0.25 to one guilder up after Aug/Oct fetched 112 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Traders said there was still no firm news on the purchase of vegetable oil by Tunisia. Tunisia is reported to have bought 24,000 tonnes of optional vegetable oil with U.S. exporters saying the business has gone to European supplies. However, traders in Europe could not confirm this. "They have an option on soy or rape oil and as it is c and f they can go to where they can get the best deal," said one trader. Traders said at the moment Europe would appear to be the best option, "But this could all change by the shipment date," said another trader. Delivery of the oil is set for February and March.
