The failure of New York futures to respond more positively to Friday's favourable US export report was generally interpreted as a bearish signal, together with the favourable crop reports forthcoming from most areas, and the weakness of import demand on several major markets. As a result, mill buyers were in no hurry to add to their purchasing commitments, and the market generally was lacking in vigour. The principal feature of interest in the long staple sector was news of Egypt's initial sales of 1997/98 crop cotton.
