Industry sources pegged the USDA's production estimate between 17.47 million and 18.15 million (480-lb) bales. In July, the USDA put the crop at 18.00 million bales, down from 18.94 million bales produced in 1996/97 (Aug/July). The USDA will issue its report Tuesday at 0830 EDT. While heavy rains delayed cotton planting in cotton-growing areas across the belt, recent hot weather has helped speed the development of the crop, industry sources said. Technical resistance was pegged at 76.00 cents where fund buying is expected to emerge and carry December to its next upside target of 77.40 cents. Most active December cotton closed 0.55 cent lower at 73.76 cents a lb, while the rest of the board settled 0.08 to 0.58 cent weaker.
