Wednesday's official volume was 7,367 lots. The most-active December contract closed 0.41 cent lower at 74.48 cents a lb, having ranged from 74.74 to 74.35 cents. The rest of the board finished 0.44 to 0.27 cent lower. Traders blamed losses on light local selling, adding that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly export and sales report was not strong enough to overcome slightly bearish technicals. The USDA said new sales for the week ended August 7 reached 104,300 bales in the 1997/98 crop, and shipments totaled 107,200 bales. The numbers were in line to slightly above analysts' expectations. Prices are expected to remain between 74.00-75.20 cents basis December, in the near term. 151802 MET aug 97
