"The specs sold it several times. But the trade supported the market at the lows," a trade source said. Estimated volume was 16,000 lots, one trade source said. Prospects of good yields in Texas and poor yields in the Delta region were expected to put the U.S. Department of Agriculture's forecast for the 1997/98 cotton crop near 18 million bales, cotton analysts said. Analysts and traders estimated this year's harvest at between 17.47 million and 18.15 million (480-lb) bales, with most estimates clustered near the high side of the range. On July 11, USDA estimated this year's cotton crop at 18.00 million bales, down from 18.94 million bales produced in 1996/97 (Aug/July). On the fundamental side, the recent rains in west Texas was beneficial to the crop, trade sources said. Most active December cotton was off 0.09 cent at 74.31 cents a lb while the rest of the board was 0.07 up to 0.27 lower. 111054 MET aug 97
