Prices rose early on a bullish export and sales report but the failure to reach resistance attracted fund selling, which pushed the benchmark December contract below unchanged. The selling dried up and short-covering emerged to lift the market off the lows by the close. Most-active December ended 0.49 cent lower at 72.61 cents a lb, having ranged from 73.33 to 72.60 cents. The rest of the board eased 0.30 to 0.48 cent. Technically, firm resistance was seen at Wednesday's high of 73.73 cents followed by 74.00 cents. A move over those key levels is expected to prompt the funds to cover an extremely heavy net short position. Fundamentally, a friendly export data failed to inspire enough buying to fuel the market over its upside target. The USDA said net sales of 1997/98 upland cotton reached a marketing year high of 295,000 (480-lb) bales in the week ended August 28. New sales reached a brisk 316,000 bales, and total commitments climbed to 3.05 million bales, nearly half of all estimated exports for the season. Some analysts have begun to look ahead to the September 12 supply and demand report, which could show an increase in estimated output for the 1997/98 crop. The USDA pegged the crop at 17.8 million bales in August. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared with Thursday's official 5,993 lots. 081232 MET sep 97
