Trading in the soft oils sector was active although in tonnage terms nothing special was done. "People are paying the higher prices which is a bit of surprise considering there isn't much faith in the high numbers on the Chicago market," said one trader. Others said one major player had been doing most of the buying. "One player is reported to be doing most of the business, but the small volume is making people wary," said another trader. Palm oil rallied during the afternoon in Europe on talk of possible better than expected Malaysian export figures for July. Two Malaysian cargo surveyors, Caleb Brett and SGS are expected to release export data on Thursday. "Talk in Malaysia suggested exports could be 710,000 to 730,000 tonnes for July so people are taking some protection against a rally," said a trader. However, many traders believe palm oil remains fundamentally weak with stocks looking set to hit one million tonnes owing to rising production and slow exports. At the close Dutch soy oil was two guilders up after Nov/Jan traded at 108 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Dutch/EU rape oil finished one to 1.50 guilders after Aug traded at 104.00, 104.50 and 105, Sep/Oct fetched 105.50, 106.00, and 106.50, Oct 106.25 and Nov/Jan 107.50, 107.75 and 108 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $5 to $2.50 up while products were unchanged to $2.50 higher. In the lauric oil sector coconut oil closed $7.50 to $5 down after Sep/Oct traded at $575, Oct/Nov at $575 and Nov/Dec at $575 a tonne cif in dealer trading. Palmkernel oil offers finished $5 up in a neglected market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 310951 MET jul 97
