Benchmark July futures fell $8 a tonne, to end at $1,469, after trading between $1,483 and $1,467. Second-month September closed $9 lower, at $1,495, while the back months sagged $6. But with interest in the market remaining thin -- volume reached only 3,845 lots on the day -- traders said the market appeared to be in the doldrums. "It's stuck in a range and it's quiet," one trader said. "The market seems as if it's content to sit. Everyone's adopted a wait-and-see attitude." Cocoa prices spent the bulk of the day hugging the unchanged level. Traders said an early half-hearted attempt by speculators to push though Monday's high of $1,480 basis July succeeded, but failed to spark any follow-through buying. Technically, trader said the July contract would need to get above $1,490, where buy-stops are thought to be building, in order to fill a key chart gap between $1,494 and $1,501. On the downside, July support was pegged at $1,465, followed by $1,450-$1,446. While fresh news was scarce, Refco analyst Ann Prendergast said the short-term fundamental outlook would continue to weigh on the market. "The market is suffering from plentiful supply," she said. "There's just ample cocoa around. July may fill the ($1,494-$1,501) gap, but no technical move can be maintained without the fundamentals behind them." 211035 MET may 97
