The benchmark July contract rose $14 a tonne on the day, to close at $1,466, after trading from $1,469 to $1,445. Second-month September ended $15 higher, at $1,496, while the back months gained $16 to $17. Cocoa prices took a downturn at the outset, pressured by commission house long liquidation, dealers said. Traders said the ring joined in on the selling in an attempt to find sell-stops below near-term support at $1,444 basis July. But scale-down commercial buying limited losses and rebuffed the test of support, prompting locals to cover their short positions. Upward momentum picked up after July broke through through $1,460-$1,462, triggering light buy-stops. On the charts, traders pegged July resistance at $1,471-$1,473. On the downside, support was still seen at $1,444. Otherwise, activity was uneventful, with July cocoa remaining well within its longtime $1,400-$1,500 range. Traders said a lack of significant news was likely to keep prices trading sideways until a clearer picture of the 1997/98 crop emerges. "We are just waiting to see how things develop," said one trader. "We may have to wait until August before anyone puts a number on next year's crop." Turnover reached an estimated 5,580 lots. 291057 MET may 97
