Players are expected to square positions ahead of Friday's May options expiry with dull activity predicted for the remainder of the week. A dearth of fundamental news kept activity light. Few changes are expected to show up in the USDA's old crop projections in Friday's monthly supply and demand report, while planting gets underway in the new crop. Analysts expect Tuesday's spec/hedge report to show the speculators with a higher net short position than a week ago. Most-active May settled 0.11 cent lower at 72.89 cents a lb after trading from 73.50 to 72.45 cents. Deferreds ended 0.02 lower to 0.40 firmer. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared with Friday's official 8,398 lots. Resistance in May was seen at 74.00 cents and support at 72.00 cents. 081018 MET apr 97
