"The planting intentions will drive it more than anything," a floor source said. "Everyone is waiting on that." Exports are expected to fall between 160,000 and 180,000 bales for the week. Market sources anticipate a stronger number the following week due to the recent and life-of-contract low of 72.00 cents, hit on Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture pegged exports for the current crop year at 6.8 million bales. The USDA's first estimate of planted area for the 1997/98 U.S. cotton crop will be released Monday at 0830 EST. Analysts put the estimate between 13.7 million and 14.3 million acres. Cotton farmers planted 14.67 million acres last year. Benchmark May closed 0.06 cent higher at 72.65 cents per lb, having ranged from 72.89 to 72.45 cents. The back months ended 0.08 weaker to 0.20 firmer. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared to Tuesday's official 20,808 lots.
