"This was fully-expected based on the overriding technicals," O.A. Cleveland, a cotton marketing specialist with Mississippi State University, said. "We could push (May) to 71.00 cents." Cleveland added that expectations for a weak U.S. planted acreage estimate and fears that U.S. exports will fall short of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's target of 6.8 million bales, added fundamental pressure to prices. But while the last export and sales report was weak in comparison to recent reports, sales were based on the week in which May traded at its recent high of 78.00 cents. The current lower prices are likely to encourage new sales, analysts said. Industry sources widely expect a decline in 1997/98 planted cotton area, from last year's 14.67 million acres, due to higher prices for corn and soybean futures. The USDA will release its estimate on Monday at 0830 EST. Benchmark May closed 1.39 cent lower at 72.59 cents per lb, having ranged from 74.20 to 72.00 cents. The back months ended 1.27 weaker to 0.85 firmer. Volume was estimated at 18,000 lots compared to Monday's official 7,380 lots. 261107 MET mar 97
