A low shipment number could send the May contract to 69.00 cents a lb or below, they said. While some traders pegged shipments around 150,000 bales, others said the strong shipments will not show up until next week's report. "We need to be in the 150,000-bale shipment range to make the target," Carl Anderson, a cotton marketing specialist with Texas A & M University, said, referring to the USDA's export target of 6.8 million 480-lb bales. The most-active May contract closed up 0.36 cent at 72.06 cents per lb, having ranged from 72.15 to 71.37. The back months settled 0.45 to 0.05 higher. Volume was estimated at 12,000 lots compared to Tuesday's official 10,000 lots. "We're back in a range, just a notch lower than we have been," Anderson said. 031039 MET apr 97
