SARAJEVO, May 31 (Hina) - Britain has offered an additional 5,000
troops as part of with the UN Protection Force in Bosnia, UN
spokesman Christopher Gunnes said today in Zagreb. He added
that talks on their deployment were underway.
"They will absolutely wear blue berets and will be part of
UNPROFOR's command and control structure," Gunnes said, adding that
the new forces would be integrated into UNPROFOR, which needed
reinforcements.
Britain offered an additional contingent of 5,000 men for
UNPROFOR, of whom five hundred have already arrived.
Senior UNPROFOR officials in Sarajevo today gave assurances to
the Bosnian government that the newly-arrived British forces would
be part of the UNPROFOR structure and would wear UN insignia.
The matter was addressed yesterday by Bosnian President Alija
Izetbegovic, who warned in a Sarajevo TV broadcast that foreign
troops could not be sent to Bosnia without a definite mandate and
Bosnian Government consent.
The reinforcements that have already arrived will be deployed
in central Bosnia, with headquarters in Gornji Vakuf and Vitez.
All UNPROFOR's efforts to defuse the present tension in direct
contact with Bosnian Serb leaders have been to no avail, and as a
result, it has given up such efforts.
"If somebody from Pale wants to talk to us, they know where to
find us," a UN spokesman in Sarajevo said.
