SITUATION IN OCCUPIED CROATIAN AREAS MOSTLY CALM, UN SAYS

ZAGREB, May 22 (Hina) - The situation in Croatian occupied areas is calm in general. The Croatian Army have withdrawn mostly from the zones of separation, whereas Serb forces are still there, according to a statement by a UN spokesman, Christopher Gunnes, in Zagreb. In the buffer zone of the Glina sector (former sector north) there are 370 Croatian soldiers facing even 1,140 rebel Serbs, according to UN officials' reports. Polish UN members said there were two explosions and small arms fire directed at Croatian soldiers. Gunnes added that rebel Serbs "utterly limited freedom of movement" for UN personnel in that area. In the Knin (South) sector Serb insurgents were replacing heavy arms from weaponry depots, which is on the contrary to the March 29, 1994 cease-fire agreement, Gunnes said. In the buffer zone in that area there are more than 200 Croatian soldiers and around 100 Serb paramilitaries. In the buffer zone of the eastern Slavonia sector about 60 Croatian special policemen remain, and up to 300 Serb rebels are spotted there, according to Gunnes. Serbs severely limited freedom of movement to UN workers there as well, he said. Citing local Serb authorities in the occupied Croatian areas Gunnes told journalists that during the weekend about 3,800 Serb refugees from western Slavonia, who had been in the Banja Luka area, moved into southern parts of the former East Sector. He added that a local Croatian commander informed UN officials in western Slavonia that a special commission at a high level should be convened soon to investigate into cases of taking away property from UN bases by Croatian Army and Police members during recent fighting. Another UN spokesman Taylor told the journalists that Croatian police east of Pakrac are still combing the area seeking Serb rebels who have hidden themselves there. That's why UN officials have limited n movement in that area. (hina) jn mms 221606 MET may 95
