SARAJEVO, Feb 3 (Hina) - A UN military observer in Bosnia was
believed to have been killed yesterday by a colleague in a freak
moment of mental derangement, the UN said.
UN spokesman Gary Coward told reporters in Sarajevo today
that the military observer was killed near the eastern town of
Rogatica, but circumstances surrounding the killing were unclear.
Coward was unable to disclose any details on the incident
but said it was unofficially believed that the UN officer
suffered from certain psychological problems and that he killed
his colleague in a moment of madness.
The two men set out from Gorazde to Sarajevo but only one of
them was found in their vehicle when it was fired at after
failing to stop at a Serb checkpoint in Rogatica.
The body of the other observer was later discovered by the
bank of the Drina river, Coward said.
Coward reported another serious incident which happened at
Hrasnica near Sarajevo on Tuesday when Bosnian government army
soldiers held up a Russian UN personnel carrier and then arrested
and manhandled the five-member Russian crew.
UNPROFOR had filed a severe protest to the Bosnian
government over this incident, Coward said.
