U.N. REPORTS LOW-LEVEL FIGHTING IN WEST BOSNIA

SARAJEVO, Feb 3 (Hina) - The situation in west Bosnia remained unchanged with continued fighting between the Bosnian army and renegade Moslem troops backed by rebel Serbs from neighbouring Croatia, UNPROFOR headquarters in Sarajevo said today. In the last 24 hours, U.N. military observers recorded 119 detonations around Velika Kladusa and 55 in the U.N.- declared safe haven of Bihac. Bosnian army 5th Corps sources reported intense heavy artillery attacks on Buzim, but UNPROFOR was unable to confirm such reports. About 40 detonations were recorded in northern Bosnia, along the front line between Doboj and Brcko, UNPROFOR spokesman Gary Coward said. Coward said six ceasefire violations had been registered in entire Bosnia-Herzegovina in the last 24 hours, and blamed Serbs for four of them. The UNPROFOR commander for the former Yugoslavia, General de Lapresle, yesterday visited the eastern Moslem enclaves of Gorazde and Srebrenica. Last night de Lapressle met Bosnian Serb military leader, General Ratko Mladic. Mladic demanded that liaison officers be exchanged as soon as possible and that Serb officers be present in all area UN headquarters in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Coward said. But this met decisive opposition from the Bosnian government which demanded that UNPROFOR refuse the presence of a Serb liaison officer in Gornji Vakuf. UNPROFOR supported the deployment of liaison officers believing it would facilitate communication in crisis situations. During his service in the former Yugoslav army, Mladic had commanded Knin Corps and shot up military ranks for the successful occupation of parts of Croatia. After that, he was transferred to Bosnia where he became commander of Bosnian Serb armed forces, loyal to psychiatrist Radovan Karadzic, who is also on a U.S. list of war criminals.
