President Franjo Tudjman last Tuesday. #L#
After the talks, Kostovic expressed satisfaction with
explanations Klein had given gave for a number of concrete measures
taken by UNTAES, including preparations for allowing Croatian
displaced persons to visit cemeteries in the Croatian Danubian area
on occasion of All Souls' Day, on November 1, and about using
European Commission resources for the reconstruction of Vukovar.
"We expect the process of return of displaced persons to
accelerate in the next several months," Kostovic said, adding that
"there will be good news in the next few days," not giving any
further explanations.
Susak said that the meeting had come about on instructions
from President Tudjman, in order to discuss how much of the agreed
had been fulfilled so far, and added that both sides could be
satisfied with the progress so far.
He especially stressed that "some statements in Croatian and
foreign media" had impelled him to say that "Croatia is still
standing behind the decision to peaceful reintegrate the Danubian
area and that General Klein has the support of the Croatian
government".
As regards European Union resources for the reconstruction of
Vukovar, General Klein stressed that all projects had been approved
by and coordinated with the Croatian government.
There had been some confusion in the media about the EU
project with Vukovar, Klein said, adding that all the projects had
been approved by and coordinated with the Croatian government in
the Spring.
We would consult with the Croatian government about all
financial resources that arrived in Croatia, before they were
spent, Klein said.
"We received General Klein's response that all projects that
were accepted by the Croatian government will be implemented and
that projects may be drafted only with the cooperation of the
Croatian government and the Reconstruction Ministry," Kostovic
said.
Klein expressed satisfaction that the General Amnesty law had
been passed, and expressed hope that people in the Croatian
Danubian area would accept and understand it. He congratulated
Croatia for its accession into the Council of Europe.
