The talks focused on the process of reintegration of the
Croatian Danubian area into Croatia's constitutional and legal
order and on problems concerning the establishment of the
Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
President Tudjman reiterated Croatia's full support for the
establishment of the Federation, which was the pillar of peace and
stability in the region. It was true that the city of Mostar was
the mirror of that process, but it was not the main problem in the
establishment of the Federation, President Tudjman said. The main
problem was the establishment of such a Federation as had been
agreed upon in the Dayton and Washington accords.
Mr Van den Broek stressed the importance of the establishment
of the Federation and President Tudjman's role in that process. He
laid special stress on the situation in Mostar, ahead of decisions
that the European Union is to make in connection with Mostar.
The two officials also discussed the problem of refugees,
stressing the need for an act of amnesty which would accelerate
their return.
As regards the issue of eastern Slavonia, both officials
expressed belief that the process of reintegration would be carried
out peacefully. The process should be completed during this year,
they agreed. The European Union supported that process, Mr Van den
Broek said.
Mr Van den Broek was accompanied by the deputy head of his
cabinet, Ed Kronenburg, director in the European Commission Pablo
Benavides and advisor Peter Dun.
The talks were also attended by Croatian Foreign Minister Mate
Granic, head of the Presidential Cabinet Gordan Radin and Croatian
Ambassador to the European Union, Zoran Jasic.
