CROATIAN PRESIDENT RECEIVES E.U. COMMISSIONER

ZAGREB, Jan 25 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on Thursday received European Union commissioner Hans van den Broek, the Presidential Office said in a statement. The talks focused on the process of the reintegration of the Croatian Danubian area into the constitutional and legal system of the Republic of Croatia and on problems in the establishment of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Tudjman reiterated Croatia's strong support to the establishment of the Federation as the mainstay of peace and stability in the region. He stressed that Mostar reflected the process of the establishment of the Federation but that it was not the basic problem. He added that the basic problem was the establishment of the Federation in line with the Dayton and Washington accords. Van den Broek also emphasized the importance of establishing the Federation, and stressed President Tudjman's role in the process. He paid special attention to the situation in Mostar and decisions the European Union was expected to pass in that regard. They also discussed the problem of refugees, stressing the need for amnesty to ease their return. Speaking of Eastern Slavonia, they expressed confidence in its peaceful reintegration which should be completed in the course of this year. Van den Broek said that the EU supported the process. The delegation of the European Commission also included deputy chief of the Cabinet Ed Kronenburg, director Pablo Benavides and adviser Petar Dun. The Croatian side was also represented by Foreign Minister Mate Granic, head of the President's Cabinet Gordan Radin, and Ambassador to the EU Zoran Jasic, the statement concluded.
