ZAGREB, June 17 (Hina) - The Electoral Headquarters of presidential
candidate of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Franjo Tudjman, on
Tuesday expressed great satisfaction about the results of elections held
on Sunday.
"We are more than satisfied with the election results because
President Tudjman won very convincingly, with over 61% of votes, which
is better than the last presidential and local elections," president of
the Electoral Headquarters, Ivic Pasalic, told Tuesday's press
conference. #L#
"The results are in line with our expectations and they should not
surprise anyone objective," Pasalic said, adding that Tudjman was one of
the rare heads of state who had fulfilled all his promises.
He had now promised a continuity, which meant that besides the
solidification of everything achieved so far, more attention would be
paid to the solving of economic and social issues, the development of
science and culture, and especially to the improvement of the position
of young people, Pasalic said.
Tudjman had won in 111 towns out of a total of 122, Pasalic said,
adding that the most pleasing victories were those in Zagreb, Dubrovnik,
Split, Osijek, Bjelovar and Rijeka.
"It is also pleasing that the President won in all counties except
the Istria County, where voters of the IDS (Istrian Democratic Party),
evidently upon instructions, voted for Vlado Gotovac," Pasalic said.
The results obviously showed that a large part of HSS (Croatian
Peasants' Party) voters, even HSLS (Croatian Social Liberal Party) had
voted for Tudjman, which only showed the correctness of his politics, he
said.
Pasalic refuted estimates of certain foreign observers that the
elections had been free, but not fair, saying that such assessments
were not based on true facts.
"The elections were fair, the campaign was carried out within legal
frameworks and all candidates had equal access to the media," Pasalic
said.
He added that President Tudjman's campaign had cost less for these
elections than the prior ones.
The elections had shown that the HDZ was the main centrist party,
that the second most powerful party was definitely the SDP and the third
most probably the HSLS, Pasalic said, and expressed confidence that such
a tendency in the standing of parties would continue.
