ZAGREB, 16 June (Hina) - The Croatian Election Commission on Monday
issued a report on temporary, incomplete and unofficial results of
Sunday's presidential elections. #L#
By 5 p.m. Monday, the Commission processed returns from 7,393 out
of a total of 7,558 polling places.
The number of voters registered in the 7,393 polling stations is
3.782,662. Out of that number, 2.158,388 voters went to the polls in
yesterday's election.
There are 38,588 invalid and 2.119,800 valid ballots.
Presidential candidate Vladimir Gotovac (Croatian Social-Liberal
Party - HSLS, candidate of nine opposition parties) won 370,890 votes
(17.50%).
Presidential candidate Zdravko Tomac (Social-Democratic Party, SDP)
won 446,912 votes (21.08%)
Presidential candidate Franjo Tudjman (Croatian Democratic Union -
HDZ) won 1.301,998 votes (61.42%).
Speaking at a press conference at 6 p.m., the Commission's head
Ivan Mrkonjic said that some 88,000 voters went to the polls abroad. Out
of that number, 48,000 voters went to the polls in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
That is a smaller turnout than the one in 1995, when some 145,000
voters went to the polls abroad, said Mrkonjic.
The reason for the smaller turnout is the impossibility to vote
outside of diplomatic and consular buildings, in particular in Bosnia-
Herzegovina and Germany, Mrkonjic said, adding he held that his
estimation on a 60%- turnout in Croatia would be confirmed.
That, he said, would be a good turnout, within European standards.
Returns from mixed polling stations for soldiers, seamen and
prisoners have not arrived yet, Mrkonjic said, adding that complete
results of yesterday's election would be known by the end of the week.
