Asked when they were to move to Lovas and Tovarnik permanently, the
municipal offices' personnel said they would move as soon as possible.
The Croatian flag and coat-of-arms, as well as President Tudjman's
picture have been put up at the office in Lovas, and a plaque has been
put up on the building, saying "Republic of Croatia, Vukovar-Srijem
County, Lovas Municipality, Municipal Council - Administration". The
same had been put up in Tovarnik.
At the opening of the offices, municipal chief Zeljko Cirba (of the
Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ) expressed hope that Croatian displaced
persons would soon return to Lovas, but also that issues of over 700 of
Serb refugees who had moved to Lovas from western Slavonia would be
resolved more quickly, in line with possibilities offered to them by the
Croatian government.
President of the Lovas Serb Independent Democratic Party (SDSS),
Dobrica Ecimovic, said that the cooperativeness of the local Serbs was
guaranteed, estimating that it was "natural that displaced Croats want
to return to their homes, but so do displaced Serbs".
The Tovarnik office was opened by the municipal deputy chief, Jakob
Asic, (HDZ). SDSS representatives at the Tovarnik municipal council did
not attend the opening of the office in Tovarnik.
Civil servants for the Lovas and Tovarnik municipalities arrived in
the Croatian Danubian area in vehicles with Croatian license plates.
During the next several days, vehicles with Croatian license plates
entering the Danubian area every day for business are to receive special
UNTAES cards which would enable them to enter the UN-administered area ,
on their own responsibility.
