SITUATION IN KOSOVO FAR FROM SATISFACTORY - UN OFFICIAL

PRISTINA, July 1 (Hina) - The head of the UN Transitional Mission in Kosovo, Sergio Vieira de Mello, appointed first nine judges in that province, who taken solemn oaths in the UN headquarters in Pristina last night. Five ethnic Albanians, three Serbs and one Turk were sworn in on that occasion. Despite endeavours, the situation in Kosovo is far from satisfactory, said Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights who toured Kosovo on Wednesday. She welcomed the return of Albanian refugees, but voiced concern over the expulsion of Serbs and Gypsies from the province. A representative of the British KFOR contingent said two men of Serb origins were killed in Lipljani near Pristina on Wednesday. International peace-keepers on Wednesday found 78 corpses in the village of Celina 15 kilometres north-west of Prizren. The victims are believed to be of the Albanian descent.(hina) ms
