PARIS, June 13 (Hina) - Croatia's official proposals for putting
the Cathedral of St. Jacob in the coastal town of Sibenik, and the
Kopacki Rit, a nature reserve located where the Drava meets the
Danube, at the World Heritage List were forwarded to the UNESCO
headquarters in Paris last Thursday.
Croatia's Ambassador to the UN Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Vesna Girardi-Jurkic, handed over
the official nomination to the head of the UNESCO World Heritage
Centre, Mounir Bouchenaki.
Bouchenaki has recently visited Croatian coastal towns of Trogir,
Split, Dubrovnik, Sibenik, Pula and Porec and become acquainted
with the condition of Croatian monuments and natural beauties which
are either already included into the World Heritage List or
nominated as entries in the list.
During the talks the Croatian Ambassador Girardi-Jurkic announced
that her country would broaden the nomination of the Istrian town of
Pula to enter the List so that such new and more extensive proposal
will cover the historical downtown of Pula.
Mounir Bouchenaki said that this July the UNESCO would hold an
international conference of representatives of management of
natural beauties. The manager of the Plitvice Lakes will be also
invited to attend the conference at Baikal Lake, in order to notify
other participants of the successful example of the Croatian lakes
that remained preserved during the war as well as of effective
removal of war consequences from the area. The UNESCO highly
appreciates the decision of Croatian Government to extend the
region of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Bouchenaki added.
