Adria regional organisation most strongly condemned the campaign
of ethnic cleansing which the Yugoslav authorities are conducting
in Kosovo, read a resolution on solving the Kosovo crisis, adopted
by the organisation in May.
The Chancellors' Conference of the Alpe-Adria working community
includes 48 universities and institutions of high education from
Austria, Bavaria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.
At a meeting held on May 8 in Graz, on the occasion of its 20th
anniversary, the Conference adopted the above-mentioned
resolution, which Hina received today from the Zagreb University
Chancellor's Office.
The Chancellors' Conference advocates the protection of human
rights as stated in the United Nations' Charter, and emphasises
that human dignity and conscience stand above the sovereignty of a
state.
Calls for the respect for those rights must not be dismissed as
"interference with internal affairs". Citizens must be protected
from the arbitrariness of their own government, the resolution
reads.
The Chancellors' Conference expressed their solidarity with the
Pristina University since the violence in Kosovo had started with
the violation of the province's autonomy and expulsions of
university professors and students.
The Chancellors' Conference of the Alpe-Adria Working community
also called on the European Chancellors' Conference to establish an
international tribunal for the protection of autonomy of
universities.
