SISAK SISAK, May 23 (Hina) - The first festival of Croatian folk groups from western Europe took place in Sisak, 50 kilometres south-east of Zagreb, on Saturday evening. Six ensembles - three from Germany and three from Switzerland -
took part in the event organised by the 'Matica iseljenika', a cultural organisation for the Croatian Diaspora, and the Culture Centre in Sisak. About 200 participants, most of whom were young women and men, performed Croatian folk songs and dances at the festival, held under the auspices of local authorities. The Festival in the overcrowded centre was opened by the Matica head, Ante Beljo, who said that this organisation had been initiating festivals of the Diaspora's folk groups in the independent and free Croatia in order to strengthen ties between Croats in the homeland and abroad.
